Western Pacific Association of Transactional Analysis

The Western Pacific Association of Transactional Analysis (WPATA) was founded in 1985 to meet the need for a Transactional Analysis training and examining body in the western Pacific region. In 1996 WPATA’s course were granted national accreditation.

Transactional Analysis (TA) is one of the humanistic models of working with people, utilising the psychology of communication. TA is a theory of personality, and a systematic psychotherapy for personal change and growth. Its philosophy is one of emphasis on the uniqueness of the individual, self-responsibility, and knowledge of the human tendency towards health and growth. Founded by psychiatrist, Dr. Eric Berne, in the 1960’s, TA has applications in clinical work as well as organizational and educational applications. TA provides methods to reach awareness, understanding, and constructive changes in our emotional, belief and behaviour systems, with a central philosophy of healing and learning occurring in a healthy, rewarding relationship, in tune with others.

TA places emphasis is on both internal dynamics and interpersonal relationships, paying attention to the individual’s capacity for thinking and feeling. The therapeutic relationship is one of respect and shared responsibility.

TA addresses personality difficulties and issues such as self-esteem, depression, anxiety, domestic violence, sex abuse, eating disorders, grief, group, couple and family therapy and various types of relationship problems.

Training - WPATA provides three levels of accredited training:

A short introductory TA 101 course which is awarded Certificate 1

A 3-4 year Transactional Analysis psychotherapy training (Level 1) for which successful completion awards an accredited Advanced Diploma

A five year Teaching and Supervising training program (Level 2), completion of which awards and accredited Advanced Diploma.

WPATA members come from a variety of backgrounds such as Psychology, General Practice of medicine, Social Work, Nursing, Teaching, Science.
