Melbourne College of Contemporary Psychotherapy

The Melbourne College of Contemporary Psychotherapy Incorporated was formed in 1995 by a group of Victorian Psychotherapists who had completed the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy (NSW) training.

The Association membership, including trainees, is twenty four. We have several associate members. Membership is possible after completing our course or if the applicant has a particular contribution to make to the College. All members are practicing psychotherapists or general practitioners utilizing self psychology within their general practice. Members come from a variety of backgrounds including psychiatrists, counsellors, psychologists, consultants, clergy, play therapists, and general practitioners.

Self Psychology is now one of the main groups within the psychoanalytic movement in the United States and continues to be adopted by practitioners on the Australian scene. Launched by Heinz Kohut in the 1960s as a way of working with narcissistic clients, it has since been applied to work with personality disorders, especially borderline, and traumatised patients.

This way of working is a conversational model, and is helpful in most conditions where feelings of exploitation, shame, low, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, feelings of emptiness, meaninglessness and or rage are present. Some of our members treat addictions.

The College provides an introductory year for those considering psychotherapy as a vocation and a Diploma of Adult Psychotherapy at postgraduate level. This is taken part time over a minimum of three years. People who are not graduates, but who have relevant experience are considered. The emphasis is upon clinical training.
